BRONZE SCULPTURE - THE ART OF LOST WAX

In the third millennium B.C., somewhere between the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf, an artist crafted a mould in beeswax, covered it in liquid clay and cooked it in a fire. In the flames the wax was lost, replaced by empty space. Tin and copper - alloys of bronze - were gathered and heated. Once melted, the metal was poured into the cavity of the fire-hardened clay. The metal cooled and the sculptor knocked the clay from the metal. The first bronze was cast.

French artisans originally inspired the production of the small bronze figures, but in 1850, a man by the name of Mathias Berman founded the manufactory in the year 1850 in Hernals near Vienna at his own home and started to mould, to chase and to color animal bronze figures. During the World Exhibition in the year 1873, a certificate of recognition for his products was given to him by the Austrian government. This was the birth of what we know today as Vienna Bronze, or in Austrian: "Wiener Bronze". This is exactly what we are offering in our eBay shop.

Because of Bermann's success, many others followed and already at the turn of the 19th century, there were around 50 companies working in the bronze casting field. Viennese artists, who did their job with great artsmanship and much empathy, produced designs and models for vienna bronze pieces. Some famous names among them were: Kauba, Zach, Hagenstock, Titze, Perl, Lorenzl and many others.

These artists have created up to 14,000 different bronze figurines, and from this enormous collection, we present you an exclusive, ever changing selection of exquisit individual bronze items, as well as precious small bronze scenes.

Most of our bronzes are marked with a "Punze" (Hallmark) and some even come with a certificate. This guarantees that you are buying a genuine vienna bronze art piece and not one of the recasts, forged mainly in Hungary and some other countries. Beware of those - you'll find those on eBay as well.
